Review: Mondo Movie (Podcast)

Ask any film aficionado to define “mondo” cinema (not to be confused with “gonzo” — that’s a porn sub-genre) and you’ll get a number of responses. Some will directly reference its namesake (the film, “Mondo Cane”) or pseudo-documentaries in general, while others toss in exploitation, gore, giallo, and weird foreign fare. The two hosts of Mondo Movie podcast would probably say yes to all of the above, and more. Oh, so much more.

Mondo Movie is hosted by UK-based movie critics Ben Howard and Dan Auty, a couple of young but not too young mondo fans with some real insight into everything from Hong Kong martial arts films to horror the world ’round to cult classics to women-in-prison flicks to many more types most of you have never heard of. If it’s weird and wonderful and has made it to either a movie screen or a VHS/DVD release, Howard and Auty have probably dissected it with a whole bunch of charm, wit, and, yes, a keen knowledge on the genre. And, it’s possible they might try to squeeze in a film or two you’ve heard of, possibly a blockbuster, but the meat of this show is comprised of uncommon finds. Fair warning: get ready to start writing titles down from the first episode you hear.

If you’re looking to discover strange, fantastic, and sometimes terribly misguided films, Mondo Movie is your absolute guide. The show is entertaining and informative. Kinda like a Russ Meyer film, but sadly lacking in cleavage and hot cars. Good show, chaps! (Available on iTunes)
