Happy Halloween! Happy 16th, Purging Talon!

“Halloween is the night / The legend says the ghost will rise
On Halloween they can’t redeem / A restless soul from an ancient scene
At the sound of the demon bell / Everything will burn to Hell
Rise… rise… rise… It’s Halloween
Rise… rise… The ghost will rise”
- Mercyful Fate
Yes, today marks the sixteenth year of Purging Talon’s existence. Sweet sixteen, and been kissed by EVERYONE! Well, okay, maybe not everyone. There might be some folks out there who actually don’t like me or my media output for some reason. Heck knows the local media has avoided my press releases this year, and for Halloween, specifically. (I’m looking at you, Seven Days.) I can’t imagine why. I’m actually a very nice fellow. Charming, affable… and much better dressed than you are. But, anyhoo…
It’s been quite the journey with, seemingly, no end in sight. I suppose that one day, I’ll be too old to read an audio or video timeline on a screen, or be able to properly type text for a new book, but that day is (or should be) long off. Still working on some book projects, but time is really the obstacle right now. Probably that whole college degree thing. Oh, and the little old thing I do with Jason on a couch on Sunday nights with the lights off.
Yes, I mean Terror Transmission, you filthy rubes! Sometime today, I will have the new episode uploaded and ready for your consumption. I’ll post about it here tomorrow, but if you want it earlier than that, you’ll have to get it either from the official site or from iTunes. And you should. It’s a good one. Scout’s honor.
Speaking of the show, we’re doing a big party for it tonight. It’s not entirely open to the public but if we know you, it’s possible that a simple and timely e-mail might get you an invitation. (You might also have to be in the area, naturally.) We’re going to paint the tyke green, for crying out loud, and that alone is worth showing up for! Plus, we’ll get lots of candy, just like little Tommy wanted in the movie, Halloween. The difference, of course, is that we’re totally going to nail the babysitter.
I’m going to be pretty busy this weekend, so if you need to reach me, best method is my phone. If you know the number, then you’re probably someone I wish to hear from. If you don’t, then go get your own damn treats!
Wishing many of you a wonderfully wicked Halloween. That one night of the year when everyone gets to pretend to be us. And isn’t that special?
3 commentsSpooky Mac Finder Pillows!

from the Unofficial Apple Weblog:
Throwboy… make handmade pillows, usually in the shape of Mac-related icons. And they just recently sent word about a brand new line of pillows: just in time for Halloween, they’ve branded the Finder and related icons with a little October 31st flavor. Sure, they’re silly and pretty useless (really — who buys a pillow for a one day-a-year holiday?), but just look at them! The FrankenFinder especially is pretty darn charming.

It seems that many musical personalities would like to wish you a Happy Halloween! Gathered around the Samhain bonfires are King Diamond, Fastway, Helloween (and the lesser known Halloween), Ministry, The Misfits, and, yes, even the late Anton Szandor LaVey as well.- Some people often feel they need help in costume selection around this time of year. Some can help. Others should not.
- Halloween has some extra significance to Satanism. Let’s go back in time to 1999 as Magistra Barton conveys her own sentiments on the season.
- Someone call a priest! Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream is seducing children into this evil wicked observance with ice cream and games!
- And, finally, Tim “Frankenfurter” Curry would like to inform you that anything can happen on Halloween.
Movie Review Quick Cuts
Surveillance – A crime thriller directed by Jennifer Lynch, daughter of David Lynch. I mention that because her father’s influence is there, but the former very much makes a movie that’s also her own (with a bit of a Coen Brothers vibe, as well). Differing accounts of an accident given to two FBI agents shed light on a string of murders in New Mexico, providing some plot twists — some predictable, some very much not. Worth watching.
Mum and Dad – We’ve seen the killer family before, from Spider Baby to Texas Chainsaw Massacre to Mother’s Day to Frontiers, etc. This certainly follows some established territory, bringing in the gore but also with some laughs. If you’re not completely tired of this set-up, then you might enjoy this. It has its moments, but not in spades.
Grace – Comparisons to It’s Alive will be made, but it’s fair to say that this bloodthirsty zombie baby is actually rather creepy and the storyline keeps your attention. The premise might sound hokey, but the execution is surprisingly good. Decent gore and well-shot. Check it out.
Book of Blood – Following the not-so-great Midnight Meat Train comes another Clive Barker story that doesn’t successfully translate to the Big Screen — this one, being a haunted house tale with a twist. It’s not utterly horrible but it’s in no way good, either. It feels like a mediocre Masters of Horror episode, if you have that little reference in mind. Will someone please take a Barker tale and make a movie on it that comes even reasonably close to the masterpiece that is Hellraiser? Please? He deserves better than this.
Irreversible – This is viewing number two for this one, just making sure I disliked it as much as the first time. And I did. Characters you don’t care about, a story that plods along (albeit, in reverse), obnoxious camerawork, and an extended rape scene for shock. Big deal. France has given us much better offerings this decade, to be sure. This movie tries too hard and ends up pretentious and empty.
Like horror movies? Listen in as Jason and I take on our classic favorites on Terror Transmission!
1 commentBLECH!

Jason and I will be going into the Viewing Room to record another fun-filled episode of Terror Transmission this coming Monday, for release on 1 November (or possibly sooner). And it doesn’t taste very good, it seems. Why are we retching? Was it the movie? Or the strange Icelandic liquor? Stay tuned, horror fiends!
3 commentsHitchcock On Tomorrow Show (Fall 1973)
Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6
Long thought to be lost or destroyed, a complete recording has been found of one of the few hour-long interviews of Alfred Hitchcock. Originally broadcast as one of the first Tomorrow Shows with Tom Snyder in the Fall of 1973. This recording is from a second repeat of this show broadcast on Memorial Day, 1980.
